Instructors/Schools
There are several types of training available, with complementary aspects so that a mix is recommended for a full training program. These are described below.
Foot Launch/Training Hill (FL): You start by running the glider across flat ground, and as your control improves you begin moving further and further up the hill until finally you are flying off the top. This is good for launch and landing practice, though you don't have enough time to really learn to control the glider in the air.
Tandem Foot Launch (TF): You run off a mountain launch with a tandem instructor, and may have some time to play with the glider in the air. This is typically considered as an introductory flight rather than full training. Unfortunately due to insurance changes several years ago our tandem pilots can no longer charge for tandems so are only offering to family and friends.
Scooter Tow (ST): a winch (made of a converted scooter) pulls you skimming along the ground at altitudes below 10 feet, then you release and land. From this you learn basic control of the glider and landing. The advantage over a training hill is that it is less dependent upon wind direction, so lessons are more common.
Aerotow (AT): You are pulled up behind and ultralight with a tandem instructor with you in the glider. Depending on your experience level the instructor will cede control of aspects of the flight to the student, until finally the student is in control the whole flight. Due to the presence of the instructor on board in combination with powered tow this is the least weather dependent of the instructional modes.
Given the travel time it is best to think of each training session as a full weekend engagement involving local attractions beyond lessons. Camping is available at all intructional venues, but don't expect hot showers. You may wish to explore additional camping or motels nearby.
The instructors listed below are convenient to our region and may be part of our flying community, but are not officially affiliated with the Hyner Hang Gliding club.
